Romans 1:18-21 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities— his eternal power and divine nature— have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
In America we have seen rioting, anarchy, sexual immorality, looting, lying and increasing hatred and division tearing us apart as a nation. Why? We have forgotten God.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian intellectual, said, “Over a half a century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disaster that had befallen Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.’ ” Solzhenistan continues, “Since then I have spent well-nigh fifty years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies, and have already contributed eight volumes of my own toward the effort of clearing away the rubble left by the upheaval. But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some sixty million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: ‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this happened.’ ”
This passage in Romans says that men suppress the truth by their wickedness. Anyone can see clearly the evidences of God in His creation – his eternal power and divine nature. The passage in Romans goes on to say that because men have suppressed the knowledge of God, their thinking becomes futile, their foolish hearts are darkened and they become depraved. Therefore, God turns them over to sexual immorality and ungodly character – every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity, envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. (Romans 1:29-31)
The result is the suppression of truth, the degradation of character and the disintegration of civil society. This is exactly what we are seeing played out before our eyes today. What is the solution? Turn back to God.
